You may have heard—and already know—that in spring the liver is the main organ of the season. Do you also know why?

According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), whose association in spring is with the Wood element and its expansive energy, we naturally connect with the energy of Growth. We are in the season of rebirth and growth, like a plant that sprouts. Here, the liver has a similar energy: it promotes the free, upward flow of Qi (energy) throughout the body. So cleansing and purification processes—green juices and the like—are highly recommended now. (If you're interested in a guided process, I recommend Kanke at @floreciendo)

It is the season for detoxification and renewal, which are key functions of the liver. In the previous newsletter I had talked about the liver emotion, which relates to anger and frustration. The flow of spring energy can intensify these emotions... (link to the newsletter).

Another fundamental relationship now is between the liver and the tendons/muscles. The liver is not seen only as an organ, but as a system that governs the body's movement and flexibility. The Liver that "governs the tendons" stores and regulates the blood that nourishes the tendons, ligaments, and muscles. If the liver is healthy and has enough blood, the tendons are strong, flexible, and elastic, which allows fluid movement. When Liver Blood is deficient, the tendons are not properly nourished. This can show up as muscle stiffness, cramps, spasms, weakness, and lack of flexibility.

The liver is also responsible for the smooth flow of Qi (vital energy). Stress and strong emotions (such as anger) can stagnate Liver Qi. This stagnation is often felt physically as tension and pain in the muscles and tendons, especially in the neck and shoulders.
