Why is it harder to sleep well in summer?
Because summer is the season of the Fire element, which relates to the Heart—the home of the Shen (our mind and spirit). To sleep, the Shen must "return" to the Heart and rest peacefully. If the Fire element is out of balance, that "home" becomes less welcoming.
Excess Heat: If there is too much Fire (from stress, strong emotions, or spicy food), the Shen becomes agitated. It's like trying to sleep in a room that is too hot; the mind stays hyperactive and can't slow down.
Lack of Water: If Water (Kidneys) is not enough to cool Fire (Heart), the spirit "evaporates" and insomnia arises with anxiety and night sweats.
To calm the Fire element and address insomnia, Qigong seeks to "bring the fire down" from the head to the abdomen and balance the relationship between the Heart (Fire) and the Kidneys (Water).
